Pond Management

Pond Management

PLM has a specialized pond division to manage smaller bodies of water, whether you have a puddle or a 10 acre pond. We offer a wide variety of pond management services, including herbicide and algaecide applications, water quality evaluation, biological control programs, fish stocking, and pond design consulting. We offer a range of specialized services for golf course ponds, to ensure that they meet the combined requirements of aesthetics and use as an irrigation water source.

Proper management of a pond is very important. Our experienced staff understands the delicacy of each pond and the fact that “one size does not fit all.” When managing a pond we need to look at the big picture. For example if excessive or improper use of algaecides and/or herbicide are used, it may reduce native desirable plants to limited or eradicated levels. If this occurs it will increase the potential for exotic plant species and tolerant undesirable algae growth. By implementing a balanced management program, provided by our experienced pond management division, we can increase the recreational ability and aesthetics of your pond while also promoting a balanced ecosystem that supports a diversity desirable of plants, algae and fisheries environment.

Advantages of Aerated Water

  • Improves and increases fish environment
  • Increases fish food organisms
  • Reduces or eliminates stagnant bottom water
  • Helps prevent both winterkill and summerkill conditions
  • Eliminates odor problems
  • May reduce nuisance algae
  • Improves water quality
  • May reduce the need for chemical treatments
  • Reduces hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, methane, and carbon dioxide gases
  • Reduces harmful bacteria and many fish and waterfowl diseases
  • Increases beneficial aerobic bacteria which decreases organic sediment
  • Increases management options

Whether you need more water movement, just like the look of a fountain, or have a lake or pond with dissolved oxygen problems, we have an aerator or fountain that can meet your needs!

Fountains are decorative, but also increase water movement and provide some aeration.

Aerators are designed to keep the water oxygenated, to the benefit of fish and other aquatic life. In some cases aeration can lower nutrient release from sediments and reduce algae growth.

Worry Free Fountain Storage!

PLM Lake & Land Management’s fountain storage program includes: Removal of fountain in the fall, cleaning, general maintenance check, storage in a heated building and re-installation in the spring. This program ensures that your fountain will receive the proper care needed to maintain the highest performance and life span possible. Allowing PLM to care for your fountain will take the burden off your shoulders when trying to remove and install your fountain.

Muck Managment Info

The common term “MUCK” actually refers to the organic sediment which builds when plants do not fully decompose. Common causes of this build up can be an overload of dead plant material (for example, leaves falling in the water or excessive algae blooms) or an environment that is not suitable for bacteria activity. There are naturally occurring, beneficial bacteria in our lakes and ponds which need a healthy environment to do their job: digestion of dead plant material (organic sediment).

PLM MD Pellets

PLM MD Pellets are a natural product that focus’s on the reduction of muck. PLM MD (Muck Digesting) Pellets create an optimal environment for healthy decomposition of organic material. PLM MD Pellets are a combination of natural beneficial bacteria, enzymes, and vitamins that stimulate the biological activity at your lake or pond bottom. This stimulation allows the bacteria to feed on the organic sediment, therefore reducing the muck levels.

Over the years, PLM has experimented with many enzyme and bacteria products, all of which have produced only marginal results. With PLM MD Pellets, there is a clear and measurable result. This new product has proved to be a popular addition to many lake and pond management programs, as well as an easy to use product for the “do it yourself” riparian.
